Nonfiction for young kids (500 words or less)
World cultures
Sports, fiction and nonfiction
Humor
Holidays, especially minor ones like 4th of July (HL doesn’t do Santa or Easter Bunny)
Christmas (avoid commercial aspect)
Wants true meaning of holidays, how families celebrate, religious overtones okay
Halloween without candy or witches
Poetry for holidays
Crafts for holidays
Boy appeal stories and nonfiction
History about lesser known figures
Local history outside of NE that would have general interest
Anniversaries—look ahead 3 years and write your article to relate to an anniversary or special celebration
TIPS:
Submit stories with multiple “hooks”, like a humorous sports story that takes place in another culture on a lesser holiday *wink*, for best results.
Younger readers—up to 500 words (this is for Highlights, not for High Five) Older readers—up to 750 words (used to be 800, new trim size allows for fewer words)
Highlights pays upon acceptance. Allow at least 2 years for publication (though it could be sooner—or later). The issues are already planned a year in advance, and if your story is for December, that would be at the end of the second year.
They are swamped with the standard friendship and school stories.
Read some recent back issues to get the tone and breadth of the magazine.
Avoid pop culture, current sports figures (though biographies of past sports figures are okay), and a story that is so current that it will be dated in 2 or 3 years (“NASA wants to put another astronaut on the moon.”)
